The Get Up and Go Exercise Program for Older Adults at HRC
older adult exercise

If you’ve been following the blog, you may recall that last week I shared the story of Alvin Nigrosh, who underwent physical rehabilitation at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center (HRC) after receiving surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to remove blood clots in his legs. Alvin stayed at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center until he was able to get back on his feet again.

But exercise is important for all seniors, not just those in rehab. Research has shown that exercise can reverse age-associated conditions such as muscle loss (sarcopenia) and bone loss (osteopenia), and reduce the chance of disability caused by cardiovascular disease, stroke, arthritis, diabetes, some forms of cancer, osteoporosis, pulmonary disease and dementia. In fact, exercise can help you take charge of many chronic conditions.   Regular exercise may allow you to reduce or even eliminate certain medications. To top it off, exercise can boost your energy, improve your mood and help to revitalize your life!

At Hebrew Rehabilitation Center and at Center Communities of Brookline, we offer exercise programs to any older member of the community who is struggling to maintain or regain flexibility, movement and independence. Our exercise programs are also for those who are physically fit and active and would like to exercise in an environment of peers overseen by a staff who specializes in exercise for older adults. Our affordable Get Up and Go program, a supervised exercise program specifically geared to help increase fitness in older adults age 60+ in the community.

There are many reasons why older adults avoid the gym. Loud music and the complicated gym equipment of the average gym can be uncomfortable or intimidating for many older adults. Programs designed specifically for older adults provide an outlet where they can exercise in a supervised environment that is equipped for their needs.

Our Get Up & Go program is a great choice for older adults.

So very little on exercise for seniors. Many cannot afford gyms, or other structured programs. Yes, I know, the world belonngs to the young, but we are still with you. More should be offered and more research needs to be done for older folks, without trying to sell us something. Just my thought on this as I am trying to take charge of my health after too many years of not doing so. I believe it is never too late, and also believe the older folks are worth saving just awhile longer. Also, do not talk down to us or treat us like morons --- I dare say, many of us are sharper than some of our drug ridden counterparts of younger years.
