Aging in Place? Good Care Can Come to You

The difference between home care and home health care

Dorothy said it best, “there’s no place like home.” With age, often needs for care change, which means assessing living options. Yet we can all agree that the comforts of home are always beckoning.

For that reason, many seniors make “aging in place” a high priority even as they feel their functional abilities – and sometimes their health – have begun to fade. Thankfully, with the help of home care services and home health care services, many people are able to maintain their independence in their own homes for quite some time.

If this is an option that you or a loved one are considering, it’s important to know your options. There are many service providers who offer in-home care or home health care, and some, like Hebrew SeniorLife, who provide both.

So what’s the difference?

Home health care requires a physician’s referral and is skilled care provided by medical professionals. It’s often used after a hospital stay to promote a speedy recovery or to help manage a chronic illness. Home health care often consists of:

  •        Skilled nursing
  •        At-home physical therapy
  •        Pain management
  •        Wound care

In-home care provides non-medical support to sustain and maintain quality of life, and ensure that a person is comfortable and safe within their home. Home care services can include any of the following:

  •        Help with personal grooming
  •        Meal preparation
  •        Medication maintenance
  •        Assistance with errands, like prescription pick-up and grocery shopping

Now that you know the options, it’s important to find the right provider. Talk to other senior service providers to get recommendations, or seek out providers that have recently won awards or recognition for their care. Hebrew SeniorLife Home Care, serving Greater Boston, was recently recognized as a top-performing Medicare-certified home health agency by HomeCare Elite®. Reviewed by the ABILITY® Network and DecisionHealth, HomeCare Elite is an annual compilation of the most successful home care providers in the United States and names the top 25 percent of agencies in home health performance measures. Reviews from agencies like HomeCare Elite can help point you in the direction of a quality home health provider in your area and have you living at home – in health and comfort – faster than the click of a ruby slipper.
